The law in force
Driving in the UAE is governed by Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 on Traffic Regulation, which came into effect on 29 March 2025. It replaced the earlier federal traffic law, so older articles about points and penalties may no longer be accurate.
Fines, black points and suspension
Many violations carry a fine, and some also add black points to your traffic record or lead to the vehicle being impounded. Points build up over time; reaching the limit can lead to your licence being suspended.
Under the law, the licensing authority may suspend, cancel or refuse to renew a licence if the holder is deemed unfit. Serious offences, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or driving with a suspended licence, carry the heaviest penalties.
The exact points for each violation and the suspension thresholds are set by the authorities and can change. We only publish figures we can confirm from the authorities' own current material, and we haven't yet found one for the 2025 rules. That's why this page has no points table, unlike many sites that still show figures from the old law.
